Former Devils Coach Paul Heavey Congratulates Andrew Lord’s Team

Paul Heavey, the coach who led Cardiff Devils to the Superleague title 20 years ago, has sent his congratulations to the 2016-17 champions.

Devils clinched the title with a 6-2 win at Sheffield Steelers and were presented with the League trophy following their 6-1 home win against Fife Flyers.

Heavey, former Devils captain and coach, was in charge when Devils were crowned champions in 1997 when the ‘black line’ of Steve Thornton, Ivan Matulik and Ken Hodge were a key element of the team.

They finished four points clear of runners-up Sheffield Steelers with Ayr Scottish Eagles third.

“Devils have had a phenomenal season and I am delighted for everybody involved,” said Heavey. “Andrew Lord has done a fabulous job, while the club finally have solid owners again and a new rink.

“Their fans are passionate, loyal and have so much hockey knowledge. They deserve to have a winning team and it’s great to see Devils top of the league.

“I can’t believe it’s 20 years since that Superleague success. It doesn’t feel anything like that long.

“Earlier in the season I watched Devils play against Braehead Clan in Glasgow and they won comfortably. The team had speed, strength, skill and grit, all ingredients which are crucial to a winning team.

“My congratulations to everybody at the club. It’s been a long time, but the fans have a team to be proud of.”

Former Devils forward and bench coach Neil Francis, who is now part of the club’s management, presented the League trophy to captain Jake Morissette after the clash with Flyers at Ice Arena Wales.

Club President John Jones presented players with their League championship medals.

Devils still have two League fixtures left in the regular season, both against Belfast Giants at home this weekend. The face-off time is 7pm on Saturday and 6pm the following evening.

The two matches are certain to be sold out and champions Devils need one win to be certain of winning a third trophy.

They have already lifted the League championship and Challenge Cup, while one win this weekend will ensure they finish top in the Erhardt Conference.

Lord’s men will then focus on the end-of-season play-offs with the home leg of their quarter-final to be held at Ice Arena Wales on Saturday, April 1 (7pm).

The finals weekend is at the National Ice Centre, Nottingham on Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9.
