Martyrs Intent On Showing Promotion Quality At Weymouth

Merthyr Town are intent on showing they are genuine promotion challengers over their next four fixtures.

The Martyrs spluttered when they suffered back-to-back Southern League defeats against Kettering and Slough, but hit back in style in a 5-0 home win against Gosport Borough.

Manager Gavin Williams travel to Weymouth on Tuesday and then go to Hitchin Town next Saturday. Stratford Town visit the Loadlok Community Stadium on Tuesday, October 24 before Merthyr travel to Redditch United for their first match in November.

Those matches will go a long way towards showing the potency of Merthyr’s battle to stay in touch with the leading bunch.

Williams has a near full strength squad to select from following the return of Curtis McDonald to fitness, while Stuart Fleetwood is back after suspension.

The only player currently ruled out is big striker Ryan Prosser, who has a back problem.

Dorset club Weymouth have won their last four fixtures, beating St Neots Town 2-1 in their last outing.

Brandon Goodship and Harry Baker were the Weymouth scorers and that was a second win in four days following a 6-2 success against Farnborough.

“It was a battling performance (v Farnborough),” said manager Mark Molesey. “It wasn’t our vintage best, but it was a massive three points.

“What we did show was real character.”

Goodship, Baker, Ben Thompson and Matt Tubbs, the experienced former Bournemouth and AFC Wimbledon striker signed on loan from Havant and Waterlooville.

“We have got some good attacking players and they are in good form,” said Molesey. “Brandon has scored and has an assist. Harry is a breath of fresh air. He loves playing in a Weymouth shirt and he certainly knows where the goal is.

“It’s important to say that Thommo has been performing for us and Tubbsy helps us out with his experience and his talking.

“The most pleasing thing for me is to see the togetherness of the squad and a good team spirit.”
