The men’s final of a World-ranking squash tournament in Hertfordshire later today will be an all-Welsh affair.

Caerphilly’s Peter Creed will battle it out with Joel Makin, from Pembrokeshire, in the Arnold Homes Tring Open $15,000 championships this afternoon (5pm).

Creed, the World number 58 who plays out of the Rhiwbina club, has fought his way through some tough matches on his way to the final.

His three matches so far have each lasted well over an hour – and he has spent a total of virtually four hours in competitive squash action on court.

In the semi-finals, Creed defeated number one Adrian Waller (England).

Second seed Makin, aged 23, is ranked 43 in the World and has eased his way through to final.

It has been a punishing tournament for Creed, who defeated Spain’s Carlos Cornes 11-6, 6-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-4 over 77 minutes in the first round.

He then defeated Mahash Mangeonkar (India) 9-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-7 in a match lasting 74 minutes and set up a last four clash with Waller.

Creed’s tenacity and sheer willingness to fight for every point rocked Waller, who won the first two games but could not shake off the Welshman.

In a thrilling, tense and dramatic final game it was Creed who edged the win, earning his place in the final with a 3-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-2, 13-11 victory earned over an hour and 27 minutes.

Makin came through his side of the draw by beating Asim Khan (Pakistan), George Parker (England) and Youssef Soliman (Egypt) and did not drop a game. He has spent two hours 19 minutes on court in total during the tournament.

His win against Soliman took 59 minutes, but he finished an 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 winner.

Cardiff-born Emyr Evans, who now lives in North Wales, played in Tring Open qualifying and came through a huge battle against Abhay Singh (India) 11-9, 5-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-7 in 64 minutes.

Evans then faced Danish player Kristian Frost in another five-setter and went out 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 6-11, 5-11 after an hour and six minutes.

North Wales will host a first PSA women’s World-ranking tournament next month. The event will attract some of the World’s leading players and is to be played at Bangor University between Wednesday, June 20 and Sunday, June 24.

It is a massive coup for Squash Wales following the success of Rhiwbina’s men’s PSA event which has been held in Cardiff for the last two years.
