Swansea’s Justin Is New Ross Scaccia Open Champion

Swansea’s Justin Nemeth was the big winner at the for Ross Scaccia Squash Open played at Llanishen Leisure Centre and St Mellons Country Club.

Nemeth won the B event, beating Llanishen’s Jon Rifflart 9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, and also lifted the main Scaccia trophy.

There were again four sections in the Scaccia tournament and the player with the biggest winning margin in their final was declared overall winner.

Nemeth won the B title for a second successive season and organiser Stuart Divry said: “Anybody in the tournament could have won overall and this time it was Justin. It went to the player who won their final with the biggest points differential.

“The reason for deciding the main winner in that way was because Ross was a strong believer in promoting up and coming squash players and not just looking after the elite.”

Matthew Clements, from Cardiff’s David Lloyd Club, was the A event winner after reigning champion Simon Dews and number one seed Matthew Williams (Llantrisant SRC) had to withdraw.

Clements was injured, while Dews was called up by South Wales for inter-counties duty.

Stuart Williams, from the Hirwaun club, won the C event, beating last year’s champion Chi Yau (Llanishen) in the final.

The D event saw Barry’s Craig Withycombe come out on top, winning 16-14, 10-12, 11-5, 13-11 against Kevin Hau (Llanishen) in the final.

That meant Llanishen had players in all four main finals and they failed to win any of them.

The Scaccia Open is the only Welsh ranking tournament where all profit goes to charity and the tournament raised £2,400, around £700 more than 2018 with big support from sponsors Barclay’s.

The Scaccia family again chose the British Heart Foundation as the tournament charity.

The Open is hosted by the two clubs Ross played at – Llanishen and St Mellons – and is again being organised for 2020.

Ross passed away, aged 66, in December, 2017 and a tournament was first organised in his memory last year.
