Barker To Miss Madison After Crash

Elinor Barker will miss today’s madison at the World Track Championships in Holland after crashing in Friday’s omnium.

The Cardiff-born rider was due to partner Katie Archibald with the duo strong gold medal candidates after winning the event at the Manchester World Cup meeting last November.

Barker ironically competed in the omnium as replacement for Archibald after the Scottish rider withdrew.

The 23-year-old finished sixth having been second when she won the tempo race.

But Olympic Team Pursuit champ Barker – who won silver in the event in Apeldoorn on Thursday – hit the deck in the elimination race.

Barker, who will be replaced by Emily Nelson, tweeted: “4 broken skin suits, 3 sets of wheels, 2 visors, one crash and 0 medals later my worlds omnium is over.

“Bit of bad luck and bit of bad legs left me in 6th place. Gutted to feel that I wasn’t able to make the most of the opportunity but very grateful for the experience.”

British Cycling say Barker could still compete in the points race on the final day on Sunday and defend the world title she won in Hong Kong last year.
