Ben Tozer has quit Newport County to join League Two rivals Cheltenham Town next season.

The 28-year-old midfield dynamo made 45 appearances for the Welsh side last season and was instrumental in the FA Cup run and rise to mid-table respectability. His departure will leave a huge hole in Michael Flynn’s plans for next season.

“I really enjoyed last season at Newport County with a great cup run too.  I made some good friends there and enjoyed my time in Wales,” said Tozer.

Cheltenham boss Gary Johnson has added Tozer to his other summer signings, Johnny Mullins, Ryan Broom and Alex Addai. Tozer, who started his career at Plymouth Argyle and made his Football League debut with Swindon Town, has signed a two year deal with the Robins.

His career has also seen him have spells at Newcastle United, Northampton Town, Colchester United and Yeovil Town, making over 300 appearances in his career.

“Ben is a great signing for us. He’s a fantastic athlete, an experienced player and he will be a big influence in our quest next season to push up the table and have a really successful campaign,” said Johnson.

“I’ve worked with him previously, so I know exactly the kind of character he will bring to the squad. He has tremendous energy, can play as a real ball player in midfield and he can play in a number of other positions.”
