What A Breese! Caernarfon Power Past Barry Town

Caernarfon’s Canaries completed the JD Welsh Cup third round line-up with a home win against Welsh Premier League Barry Town United

The fourth round draw will be made live during the S4C Heno programme on Monday evening.

Caernarfon led 2-0 at half-time with Jamie Breese and man of the match Nathan Craig the scorers.

Both were outstanding goals, but for different reasons.

Reese fired low last goalkeeper Mike Lewis after a flowing passing movement opened up the visiting defence after four minutes and then former Everton Craig smashed home a magnificent free-kick from 30 yards.

It looked an over-ambitious effort when Craig lined up his shot, but Lewis was helpless as the ball was struck with ferocious power and flew into the top corner just before half-time.

Barry-born striker Kayne McLaggon, who has scored eight of United’s 12 Welsh League League goals this season, came in for some rough treatment from the start.

Former Merthyr Town striker McLaggon was in on goal when he was tripped from behind after two minutes. It looked a certain penalty and a red card for the Caernarfon defender.

S4C commentators Mark Jones and Tomi Morgan agreed it looked a ‘stonewall’ penalty, but Petch ruled it was a fair challenge.

The impressive Breese, a centre-forward who leads the line with real intelligence and movement, scored soon after and Barry knew they were in for a difficult afternoon.

They were two major turning points during an entertaining first 45 minutes.

Big defender Gaz Edwards was an influential player for the home team, winning his battles and organising the team around him.

Barry goalkeeper Lewis made an excellent save from a Craig free-kick, while Alex Ramsey denied Barry at the other end.

McLaggon twisted and turned past a couple of defenders and Barry fired in a close range shot which was palmed away by the keeper. The ball still looked set to go over the line until defender Kevin Robertson round on the cover and cleared off the line.

Barry sent on Sam Jones, a product of Cambrian and Clydach’s youth system, and Troy Greening on the hour in a bid to claw their way back into the game.

Huws Gray Alliance leaders Caernarfon had the edge in midfield, while Barry danger man McLaggon was closely marked throughout.

Too many decisions went against Barry when it looked as though they should have been given the other way and referee Petch booked nine players overall.

It was a big team effort by Caernarfon, who impressed with their passing style and played with width to earn a highly creditable win.
