Charlotte Carey took her higher ranked rival to a deciding game before losing narrowly.

Carey And Evans Set To Continue Euro Campaign

Charlotte Carey and Callum Evans will continue their European Championship campaign in Alicante on Wednesday after both produced impressive displays on the opening day.

Carey, seeded 39, began the tournament with a 4-0 whitewash of Scotland’s Rebecca Plaistow in the Group 7 game of the women’s singles.

The 22-year-old from Ebbw Vale, now based in Sweden. triumphed 11-6, 11-7, 11-6,11-3 against her fellow Brit.

Carey was then involved in one of the most thrilling matches of the opening day before losing in the deciding set 4-3 to Spain’s Sara Ramirez, the No 77 seed.

Wales’ three-time Commonwealth Games ace found herself trailing 3-1, but fought back winning 11-8, 11-3 only to lose the final game 11-8.

Team-mate Evans also made the perfect start in his opening Group 23 encounter as he stunned higher-ranked opponent Tamas Lakatos 4-0.

Evans, seeded 101, saw off the 56th seed from Hungary 11-8, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8.

But Switzerland’s Lionel Weber proved tougher in his next games as the No 55 seed won 4-0 – 11-4, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9.

Carey and Evans complete their Group games on Wednesday to see if they can reach the knock-out stages.
