Carmarthen Town Face Relegation After Aberystwyth Draw

Carmarthen Town 1 Ceri Morgan 57′

Carmarthen Town are on the brink of relegation from the JD Welsh Premier League after they were unable to obtain the win they needed to keep their survival hopes alive.

Aberystwyth claimed the point they needed to ensure safety after holding Carmarthen to a 1-1 draw.

Carmarthen travelled to Aberystwyth knowing anything less than a win would leave the club unable to climb out of the bottom two.

Aberystwyth piled on the pressure when Tom Owens’ fierce drive put the hosts ahead. Ceri Morgan revived Carmarthen’s hopes after he scrambled home a precious equaliser but the Old Gold were ultimately left frustrated as Aberystwyth threatened to add a second.

Carmarthen Town now face a nervous wait until Thursday for the outcome of Llanelli’s FAW Domestic Licence appeal hearing. Llanelli’s promotion into the Welsh Premier League would be rubber-stamped if their appeal is successful and Carmarthen would be officially demoted into the Welsh League.

In the evening’s other game, The New Saints fought back as Greg Draper’s brace helped them to a 3-1 win over second-placed Connah’s Quay.

Draper’s penalty cancelled out Michael Bakare’s first-half opener for the Nomads. Ryan Pryce then put Saints ahead before Draper extended their lead five minutes from time, with his 22nd goal of the campaign.
