Not for the first time Gareth Bale found himself playing second fiddle to a rugby player named as Welsh Sports Personality of the Year. Two years ago it was a rather embarrassed Dan Biggar who picked up the prize ahead of the Wales and Real Madrid superstar at the Wales Sport Awards. This time, it was Jonathan Davies who took the title from a shortlist that once again included the 2017 Champions League winner.
Newport County have been handed a money-spinning FA Cup third round draw at home to Leeds United. County’s reward for beating Cambridge United – and making the third round stage for only the second time in 32 years – is another home draw against the club who reached four finals in an eight-year spell between 1965 and 1973. Cardiff also have a home tie against League Two Mansfield Town, while Swansea City have a tough looking away draw at Championship leaders Wolves.
Wales scrum-half Aled Davies is to become the second current international to leave the Scarlets for the Ospreys. The 25-year-old – who started for Wales against South Africa last Saturday – will join Scott Williams in moving from the current Guinness Pro14 champions to join their struggling neighbours. Like Williams, five-times capped Davies wants more starting time, having found himself in the shadow of fellow Wales international Gareth Davies.
Two-time Olympic champion Jade Jones put in a near-faultless performance to defend her Grand Prix Final crown, in the Ivory Coast. The Welsh fighter, who won Olympic gold at both London 2012 and Rio 2016, begun her title defence with a win over home favourite Banassa Diomande in the round of 16.
No fewer than five Welsh athletes have made the 40-strong British team to compete at the European Cross Country Championships in Samorin, Slovakia on Sunday, 10 December. Leading the way will be Dewi Griffiths in the senior men’s race, while Melissa Courtney is included in the Mixed Relay squad that will compete for the first time.
Christian Malcom was used to picking up medals during his outstanding career on the track, but now the four-time Olympic sprinter has been honoured for his coaching ability. In conjunction with Stephen Maguire and Benke Blomkvist, Malcolm was named as the High Performance Coach of the Year at the UK Coaching Awards 2017 in London.
