Champions Cardiff Devils Players And Fans Celebrate Elite League Title

Cardiff Devils 6, Fife Flyers 1

Champions Cardiff Devils celebrated their title triumph with six-goal blasts.

They hit Steelers and Flyers for six over the weekend and more than 3,000 spectators roared their approval.

The atmosphere was electric and fans chanted ‘We are number one’ before Devils captain Jake Morissette was presented with the championship trophy after the game.

Players took turns skating around the ice holding the trophy aloft before they united with fans in an Ice Arena Wales party.

Devils have now won a league and Challenge Cup double, while they are aiming to finish the season with four trophies.

They have two regular season fixtures left, with against Belfast Giants at home next weekend, and they need one point to win the Erhardt Conference title.

Devils will then turn to the end-of-season play-offs with the finals weekend in Nottingham next month.

First period

Devils rested American forward Denny Kearney and goaltender Ben Bowns with Thomas Murdy taking over between the pipes.

Joey Martin, Sean Bentivoglio linked up, while Layne Ulmer, who missed the 6-2 win in Sheffield because his wife gave birth to their son, returned to play alongside Haddad and Asselin.

Chris Culligan, Matthew Myers and Guillaume Doucet combined, while Patrick Bordeleau and David Brine with Chris Jones Luke Piggott.

It was a physical and occasionally bad tempered opening 20 minutes and Devils had to kill off a 5v3 penalty which they did with real composure.

The only goal in the first was scored by Asselin, who finished a flowing passing move involved Ulmer and Haddad with just over two minutes left in the session.

End if first: Devils 1, Flyers 0.

Second period:

Netminder Murdy made some magnificent saves when Flyers went in search of an equaliser, throwing out a leg twice to deny the visitors when it seemed they had to score.

Devils scored their second goal on a powerplay after 23 minutes when Haddad provided the finish after Gleason Fournier and Scott Hotham set up the chance.

It was Culligan who added the third from assists by Matthew Myers and Guillaume Doucet.

End of second: Devils 3, Flyers 0.

Third period:

Flyers scored a consolation goal 50 seconds into the final period, while Devils finished the match in style.

Brothers Andrew and Scott Hotham added two more goals with Layne Ulmer making it 6-1 to spark a championship party at Ice Arena Wales.
