Start of the 2018 ABP Newport Wales Marathon

Entries Open for ABP 2019 Newport Wales Marathon

The starting gun has sounded for runners to secure their space at the 2019 ABP Newport Wales Marathon.

Entry is now open for Wales’ premier marathon, on Sunday 5th May 2019, after nearly 10,000 runners made the inaugural ABP Newport Wales Marathon & 10K an emphatic success.

More than 70% of participants reported to have run personal bests on the flat, scenic route which takes in Newport’s regenerated city centre, the medieval towns of Magor and Redwick and the picturesque Gwent levels.

More than 600 signed-up for the new race within the first 10 minutes of entries opening last year, and spaces are expected to fly out for the second instalment. A limited number of Early Bird spaces are available again this year, but runners are urged to move quickly to take advantage of the discounted price.

General view from the start of the 2018 Newport Marathon.

Run 4 Wales Chief Executive Matt Newman said: “Last year’s inaugural event proved there is a real appetite for a world-class marathon event in Wales. Newport welcomed runners from all corners of the globe, most of whom left these shores with a new personal best.

“We’re confident the ABP Newport Wales Marathon and 10K will continue to grow as word spreads of the fast course. The race provides the perfect alternative for those who missed out on the London Marathon ballot at a discounted price for runners who get in early.”

The popular route remains unchanged for 2019 and is perfect for those chasing personal bests over the 26.2 mile distance. The race was recently listed as one of the top alternatives for runners not fortunate enough to be awarded a pace in the London Marathon ballot.

ABP regional director Matthew Kennerly said: “We were blown away by the success of the inaugural ABP Newport Wales Marathon & 10K last year. Everyone connected with ABP in the region were delighted to be a part of the event, which opened a new chapter in Newport’s rich sporting history.

“The future is bright for distance running in Wales and we cannot wait to welcome thousands of runners back to the city for the second instalment of the race.”
