Gibraltar’s Jamie Fires Winner For Undy Athletic

Gibraltar international Jamie Coombes fired a late winner for Undy Athletic in their Welsh League home fixture.

Undy and Penybont FC were locked on 2-2 in the closing minutes when Coombes struck with a dramatic decider.

That was his first goal for Undy and earned a three points haul for the Monmouthshire club.

The 21-year-old is playing for Undy on loan from Gibraltar Premier League club Lincoln Red Imps, having moved to Cardiff for university studies.

Gibraltar have been competing in World Cup qualifiers for three years and Coombes has faced Kevin de Bruyne, Romalu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Mesut Ozil and Robert Lawandowski.

In Welsh League Division One, Coombes faces the likes of Taffs Well, Briton Ferry Llansawel and Goytre.

He’s studying business management and marketing at Cardiff Metropolitan University, while he plays for Undy Athletic and the Gibraltar national team.

Their win against Penybont came courtesy of goals from Dan Jarman, James Barnes and Coombes.

“It’s interesting balancing university with international football,” attacking midfield player Coombes told FIFA.com.

“It’s quite a difference but it’s just like anything else: getting down to do the work when it has to be done. It requires a lot of discipline.

“We have a special bond and community within Gibraltar and it really shows when the team meets up.”

Lee Trundle took his goals tally for the season to 13 when he scored twice in Llanelli’s 4-1 home win against Briton Ferry Llansawel at Stebonheath.

It was a repeat of the scoreline when Llanelli defeated BFL at their Old Road Ground earlier this season.

They are top of Division One by two points ahead of Haverfordwest County and have a superior goal difference. County’s scheduled fixture at Cwmbran Celtic was postponed because the pitch was unplayable.

Goalkeeper Scott Coughlan pushed a shot from Briton Ferry’s Kieran Williams around a post, while Scott Kenton fired over the bar after Steve Davey created a shooting chance.

Joe Clarke put Llanelli ahead after 35 minutes when he lashed a shot at goal and the ball deflected off Ferry defender Ian Hillier and off the underside of the bar on its way in.

Llanelli hit a post before Trundle made it 2-0 just before half-time when he headed in a pin-point cross by Antonio Facciuto.

Ferry continued to probe with Coughlan forced to keep out a Baker effort after a surging run.

Chris Jones almost increased the lead when a shot was deflected on to a post. The rebound ran back to Jones, but his second attempt hit the other post.

Follows then fired against the woodwork before he set up Trundle a simple tap-in for the third Llanelli goal.

Three minutes later Trundle’s free kick to the back post found the head of Lee Bevan, who powered his finish into the net.

Follows and Jones were then replaced by Kyle Graves and James Loveridge before the visitors scored a consolation goal from a penalty after 70 minutes.

It was a solid win for Llanelli, although manager Andy Hill’s team were not at their best.
