Happy Jack Adds Welsh Amateur To His List Of Wins

Jack Davidson clinched the Welsh Amateur title to take another step closer to Walker Cup selection, in an excellent season that has already seen him claim the European Nations Cup title.

The Llanwern golfer beat The Vale Resort’s Tim Harry in the final at Aberdovey, to earn his third title of the season after winning the Spanish Amateur as well as his European Nations success.

Davidson was certainly one of the form players going into the event, but it was fellow Welsh international Evan Griffith of Conwy who topped the stroke play event to qualify for the match play stages.

Davidson qualified comfortably in tied fourth and the two met in the semi-finals with Davidson edging a tight contest by two holes. Things were a little easier in the 36 hole final and Davidson stretched out to win by eight and seven against Harry.

He had beaten Celtic Manor’s Theo Baker in the last 32, then Zach Galliford of Borth and Ynyslas, and Shaun Harpin on Rhos-on-Sea on his way to the semis.

Harry had beaten Southerndown’s Llewellyn Matthews in the semis, following victories over Wrexham’s Tom Williams, Nefyn’s Tom Froom and Conwy’s Lee Jones.

“This was a strong performance from Jack, who added the Welsh Amateur to his list of titles won this season,” said Golf Union of Wales championships manager David Wilson.

“Congratulations to him on what has already been an excellent season, but with the Walker Cup later in the year as well it could get even better.

“He played strongly throughout the competition, beating some tough opponents along the way, and ultimately had too much Tim in the final – although Tim can also be pleased with his week.

“Congratulations also to Aberdovey, always one of our top championship courses, which was in excellent condition and set a challenging test for the players.”
