Haverfordwest Make Progress In Welsh League And Cup

Haverfordwest County have had a solid start to the Welsh League football season.

They stand top of Division One and have progressed to the last 16 of the Welsh Cup.

County have earned five successive wins – three league, two cup – and have kept three successive clean sheets.

Their next test in First Division action is against Ton Pentre, who have manager Kevin Richards back in charge, at Haverfordwest’s Conygar Bridge Meadow this Saturday.

They have been drawn away to Pontypridd Town in the Welsh Cup and that tie will be played over the first weekend in December.

County eased into the third round of the cup thanks to a 2-0 win against Aberbargoed Buds.

The continued absence of Joe Leahy meant that Sean Cresser had to shuffle his pack a little and the Blues went into the game with Greg Walters up front, Kristian Speake tucked in just behind him and Alaric Jones, back from international duty with the Wales Academy under-18 team, slotting in at left-back.

He slotted in alongside Sam Rodon, Tim Hicks and Matthew Broome to form a solid back four.

Sean Pemberton and Ricky Watts were strong in midfield, while goalkeeper Conah McFenton deservedly kept a third successive clean sheet.

Speake fired County ahead after 12 minutes, heading home from a Watts cross, and the second was a fierce volley. Watts struck his effort from a long Jones cross with real power to score.

In their latest League match, Haverfordwest won 1-0 against Cambrian and Clydach. Stefan Williams scored to take his team back to the top of Division One.
