Ice Cool Joey Regaining His Cardiff Devils Swagger

Joey Martin his regaining his Elite League swagger.

That’s the view of Cardiff Devils head coach Andrew Lord following victories against Coventry Blaze (7-2) and Fife Flyers (5-3).

Canadian centre Martin netted three goals over the two fixtures and was voted man of the match after both.

The signs are that the top line playmaker, a stand-out forward in Elite League over the last three seasons, is regaining his best form after a lean spell.

Cardiff’s Champions Hockey League experience will surely prove invaluable in the future, but it did disrupt the team at times.

Players found it difficult to switch from the sizzling speed and top class skating in the CHL, while those games are controlled in a different way to the big-hitting physicality of Elite League.

“Everybody underestimates the CHL impact,” said Lord.”That is such a different style of play and it’s difficult bouncing back and forth between the two competitions.

“Joey needs a ton of puck control to be one of the best if not the best player, he is getting on the puck more and more and finding his rhythm. He is getting his swagger again and the next period of this season is going to be exciting for him.”

Devils play one fixture this weekend with League rivals Sheffield Steelers coming to Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay.

Captain Jake Morissette and his team are still smarting after a 4-0 defeat in Sheffield a couple of weeks ago, but they have hit back with three successive league and cup wins.

Devils are through to the Challenge Cup quarter-finals, while they take on Steelers in a League match (7pm face-off).

The Welsh club are cup holders plus reigning champions and know they need to underline that status against Sheffield this weekend.

There are only 100 or so seats left for the game with a capacity 3,000-plus attendance expected at the IAW.

The visitors will be without suspended Colton Fretter, while Devils believe two or three of their injured players will return. Patrick Asselin, Mark Richardson, Justin Faryna and Joey Haddad were all missing from the team last weekend.

Nottingham Panthers go into the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie next week aiming to pull back a two-goal deficit against ZSC Lions.

The Swiss club are one of the team teams in Europe and they won 3-1 on their home ice, but Panthers still have hope in Nottingham next Tuesday.
