Joey Martin On The Brink Of Devils Century

Joey Martin is aiming to be Cardiff Devils ton-up king this weekend.

Canadian sharpshooter Martin has scored 98 goals for Cardiff Devils in all Elite League competitions and plays in two matches this weekend.

Reigning champions Devils are second in Elite League, two points behind leaders Belfast Giants with three games in hand.

Martin needs two goals to bring up his century and his chance comes against bitter rivals Sheffield Steelers on Saturday (7pm) and Braehead Clan on Sunday (6pm).

He is Cardiff’s top scorer on 10 goals plus 16 assists this season and head coach Andrew Lord says the Devils ace is ‘regaining his swagger’.

Devils managing director Todd Kelman says: “Joey is a quality player, a quality person.

“He does it all. Leads from the front, leads us in scoring, blocks shots, kills penalties.

“It’s hard to find guys like this. We’re very lucky to have him.”

Martin is one of four centres in the Devils team, along with Matthew Myers, Paul Crowder and Layne Ulmer.

Lord’s team have won their last five matches, powering up their title challenge and qualifying for a Challenge Cup quarter-final against Guildford Flames.

Martin is top of the Cardiff Devils scoring charts, four points ahead of Andrew Hotham.

Centre Martin has scored 10 goals with 16 assists, while Hotham’s tally is 7+15.

Devils top 10: 1 Joey Martin 10+16=26; 2 Andrew Hotham 7+15=22; 3 Layne Ulmer 7+11=18; 4 Matt Pope 5+13=18; 5 Sean Bentivoglio 4+14=18; 6 Jake Morissette 5+12=17; 7 Paul Crowder 7+7=14; 8 Gleason Fournier 6+7=13; 10 Drew Paris 1+12=13.
