Jones Aiming To Stay Focussed As She Eyes Tokyo History

Jade Jones insists she will not suffer any post Olympic blues after her Rio success unlike following London four years earlier.

The Flint fighter became the youngest Brit to defend a Games gold when she retained her Taekwondo -57kg title in Brazil.

Jones, who beat Spain’s Eva Calvo Gomez, said she found it hard to stay focussed and motivated after her victory in London in 2012.

The 23-year-old said: “I’ve learnt a lot of lessons from London and I’m a lot wiser.

“I know you have to take a good enough break to mentally refresh and just to have a bit of time to yourself and enjoy the success rather than get back in the gym.”

Jones already has her sights set on Tokyo 2020 when she could become the first in his sport to win three Olympic titles.

“It’s amazing to be on the same page as [two-time Olympic champions] Wu Jingyu and Steven Lopez, they’re legends in taekwondo,” Jones told BBC Wales sport.

“They’ll be retired and I can do one better and get three gold medals. It definitely spurs me on to think I can do that.”
