Lauren Price Makes History Again With First Wales Women’s Boxing Gold

Lauren Price has made history becoming the first Welsh women’s boxer to win Commonwealth Games gold.

The Bargoed fighter beat Australia’s Caitlin Parker in a split decision at the Oxenford Studios on the Gold Coast.

Price improved on her bronze in Glasgow four years ago – when she took Wales’ first boxing medal as women’s boxing made its debut – to win the 75kg category.

The 23-year-old said: “I knew it was going to be tough, boxing an Australian in her backyard, but I pulled it off.

“I am the first Welsh women’s boxer to win Commonwealth Games gold and I am happy with that.”

“I’m over the moon, it doesn’t seem real. I used my speed to beat her.

“I had to wait for the opportunity to use my speed and I pulled it off.

“I go back to Sheffield with GB next week ahead of the European championships and then the Worlds later this year.

“But I’m out tonight to celebrate with the team.

“This is our best performance to date and we’ve got a great team spirit.”
