Llanelli’s Mummidi Srikar is the new under-17 Welsh Junior squash champion.

Srikar won 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9 in a fiercely contested match against Lewis Poole at the Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff.

New under-17 title holder Srikar plays out of Llanelli SRC, while he also trains at Carmarthen Leisure Centre and Cardiff.

The 16-year-old started playing at the age of seven and his father, Dr Satish Kumar, said: “Coach Jenny Jones introduced him to squash him and ever since he is pursuing with passion.

“His main mentor is his mother Satyavani, who drives him everywhere for training, league matches and championship matches and puts him in the right frame of mind and body with her advice.”

The Welsh Junior tournament was held over two days in Cardiff with age level events from under-11 through to under-19 for boys and girls.

Aberdare’s Ciara Richards, a Pontypridd High school pupil, won the girls under-19 title in style, conceding only 45 points and winning all four of her matches in straight games.

Jordan Williams, from Newport SRC, lifted the boys under-19 trophy after wins against Alfie Wheeler and Aran Edwards.

The 17-year-old Williams, who started playing squash in a schools programme at the Newport club, won 12-10, 11-5, 11-6 against Wheeler and 15-13, 9-11, 3-11, 11-5, 11-7 in his match against Edwards.

Williams, a former British national junior champion, showed great composure in fighting back from behind against Edwards to earn a five-sets victory.

Archie Turnbull won the boys under-11 event, winning 8-11, 11-4, 11-2, 11-5 against Louis Stephens and 11-3, 11-5, 11-5 against Lewis Davies.

Neath’s Millie Breach is the girls under-11 champion, winning against Nia Thomas in straight games, and older sister Ellie Breach won the under-13 title.

Alyx Kelleher defeated Georgie Lincoln 11-5, 10-12, 12-10, 11-2 in the girls under-15 event.

The South Wales boys under-13 team came out on top during their England Junior Inter-Counties Championship finals at Nottingham SRC.

Team coach Tej Saran and his players too on Northumbria and Kent.

Their first match was the semi-final against Northumbria on the show court and first up was Jac Cottrell, who emerged a 3-0 winner.

Louis Stephens, Luke Evans, Archie Turnbull and Ollie Cann also won to earn a 5-0 team win for South Wales.

In the final South Wales earned a hard-fought 3-2 win against Kent.
