Wales new boy Luke Morgan has admitted his switch from Sevens rugby to 15-a-side had exceeded his expectations.
The Ospreys wing was one of two uncapped players named in coach Warren Gatland’s squad for the autumn internationals.
Leicester Tigers wing Jonah Holmes has made 15 appearances so far this season and last, but Morgan has only played five games for his region since switching from the Wales Sevens squad.
The 26-year-old has spent the past five season concentrating on the shorter form of the game and conceded: “Joining the Ospreys and converting to the fifteens game has gone far better than I expected.
“I was given the chance against Munster, and I took it with both hands. I will also try and take this opportunity with Wales with both hands, and try to show everyone what I can do.”
Morgan scored a try in his opening game of the campaign against Munster and has now picked up four tries in five games, including one against the Scarlets in the recent Guinness Pro14 derby.
He has earned his call following injuries to Hallam Amos and Owen Lane and follows his Ospreys teammate Sam Cross, who was named in the Wales squad this time last year after just one regional appearance.
Morgan had been viewed as just as much of a Sevens specialist as Cross and has become Wales’ record try-scorer in that form of the game after playing in 41 tournaments around the world.
“I’ve had a good run of games, but it is a big shock for me, coming into my first year of fifteens and getting into the Wales squad.
“It will be a totally different experience to what I’m used to with the Wales Sevens, but I am used to being in and around the Vale and on the training pitches, so that, I suppose, will be the same.
“However, the whole environment with different players, different coaches and a different level of rugby, will be a new experience for me.
“The next challenge for me now will be to go away and have a good few weeks in camp to hopefully get my name in the hat for selection for the first game. Coming back from that into the region for the Ospreys, it will be a big thing for me to get back into that starting side.”
