Non Stanford Takes Silver For GB Quartet

Non Stanford was able to add a World Mixed Relay Triathlon series silver medal to her collection in Nottingham after helping the British quartet come home second to the USA.

Hot on the heels of her bronze medal in Yokohama in the women’s elite event last month, the Team Wales captain joined housemate Vicky Holland, Tom Bishop and Jon Brownlee in coming home 29 seconds behind the Americans on Thursday.

The USA, who were world champions in 2016 and runners-up in 2017, powered to victory, while Stanford was able to add her second place to the two gold medals she won at the World Championships in 2012 and 2014.

Next on the agenda for the world’s elite will be the ITU races in Leeds this weekend, with further relay stops in Hamburg and Edmonton to come.

With two men and two women per team, each completing a mini-triathlon consisting of a 300 metre swim, 7 kilometre bike ride and 1500 metre run, it was a short, sharp affair. Stanford led off the British effort and handed over in fourth place.

A brilliant swim and bike section from Katie Zaferes proved decisive for the Americans as first she ate into the early French lead and then stretched away, leaving Matthew McElroy to steer Team USA to victory.

Reigning champions Australia, who had added the Commonwealth Games gold to their collection on the Gold Coast in April, had to be content with fourth place. France took the bronze medal.
