Pride For McBryde As Son Billy Wins Game For Wales

Wales U20 18, Scotland U20 15

Billy McBryde made sure Wales got their Six Nations weekend off to a winning start – and that his father’s long drive north was worthwhile.

The Wales U20 replacement came off the bench to kick the crucial penalty in front of proud parent Robin.

McBryde the elder had driven from Cardiff to Colwyn Bay to watch his son and after seeing him nail the kick that completed a comeback victory from 15-5 down, Warren Gatland’s forwards coach with the senior squad then drove back again.

Shaun Evans, Tom Phillips and Keelan Giles scored Wales’ tries as they recovered from a slow start to stay unbeaten after two rounds of the tournament.

Matt Smith and Murray McCallum had crossed for the Scots and Rory Hutchinson’s conversion and penalty meant it was 15-15 in the 79th minute.

That was when McBryde – who replaced out-of-sorts kicker Dan Jones – was sent on to land his 35 metre effort.
