Newly-promoted Barry Town United have signed teenage winger Sam Jones.

Manager Gavin Chesterfield has revealed his first signing since Barry won the Welsh League title and returned to the top flight.

Jones, a quick and skilful winger, has joined Barry from Cambrian and Clydach and will be part of Chesterfield’s Welsh Premier League squad.

The 19-year-old spent eight years with Cambrian, developing through the Rhondda clubs academy.

Jones, a Wales under-18 international call-up, played for Cambrian in the 2017 Welsh Youth Cup final against Swansea City at Cardiff City Stadium, having scored all four goals in their 4-3 extra-time win over Bangor City earlier in the tournament.

“Sam is a young winger who has received much interest and impressed many in the Welsh League this season,” says Chesterfield. “I’m looking forward to Sam joining up with the squad pre-season and helping him fulfill his potential.

“Personal thanks to manager Craig Hughes and all at Cambrian who have been extremely supportive to Sam ahead of completing his move.”

Jones is delighted with his move to Barry and says: “I can’t wait to join up with Gavin and the players in July and prepare for our Welsh Premier League challenge. It’s an exciting time for Barry.

“A big thank you to all at Cambrian for their guidance and support. I’m extremely proud of all we have achieved together and will remember my time with the club fondly.”

The 2016-17 season was a huge success for Jones, who helped Cambrian and Clydach’s Academy secure an historic trophy treble plus reaching the FAW Youth Cup final for the first time in their history.

Cambrian lost 2-0 in the final against Swansea City after extra time, having hit the crossbar during the 90 minutes.

Jones and his Cambrian team won the WPDL South League title, South Cup and the WPDL National final, beating Bangor City 3-1.
