Selby Sees Off Flores To Earn World Title Shot

Andrew Selby has earned a shot at joining big brother Lee as a World Champion after seeing off Mexico’s Maximino Flores.

The Barry fighter is set for a crack at the WBC flyweight title after winning his eliminator at London’s York Hall on Saturday.

Selby claimed an unanimous 119-109, 117-111, 117-112 decision on the judges’ score cards to extend his unbeaten run as a professional to 10-0.

The 28-year-old is likely to face Daigo Higa if the Japanese successfully defends his WBC belt against Thomas Masson in Kokugikan on October 22.

“I let him give me a few too many shots because I didn’t feel he had power,” Selby told Channel 5 of his fight with Flores.

“But I’m happy with my performance. I got carried away I think.”

Flores was aggressive in the early rounds as he went after Selby but the Welshman evaded many of the punches.

Selby was able to regularly catch his opponent with short left hooks and late in the fight there was clear swelling under Flores’ right eye.

A 10th round clash of heads hurt Selby, but he escaped a cut and went on to emerge the clear winner.
