More than 80 young sailors took to the water for the North Wales OnBoard Festival in Bala, where the youngest was just 6-years-old. There was a good turnout through the All Afloat programme as well as from the clubs, showing the sailing charity launched earlier this summer is already having an impact.
Around 20 young sailors from around South Wales took part in the Llandegfedd Cymru Youth Racing Circuit (CYRC), the first step for most on the youth racing scene. Victories at Llandegfedd Reservoir meant overall victories in the South Wales CYRC series 2018 for home sailor Dylan Fletcher in the General Handicap and Cardiff Bay’s Merle Nieuwland in the Optimist boat.
John Mulvihill has admitted huge relief at his first win as Cardiff Blues coach after revealing: “We’ve been to hell and back.” After three opening Guinness Pro14 defeats – following no wins in his pre-season matches – the Australian was understandably reassured by his team’s thumping 37-13 victory over Munster at the Arms Park on Friday night. The Blues gained a winning bonus point with four tries on a night when centre Willis Halaholo reminded people why there was excitement at his arrival from New Zealand two years.
Jayne Ludlow won’t be looking back in anger at her side’s narrow failure to qualify for next year’s Women’s World Cup finals in France when she convenes her next Wales squad session at the start of next month. Instead the Wales manager will be firmly focussed on the 2021 UEFA European Championship Qualifiers when she brings together 26 players for a four day training camp at the beginning of next month.
Welsh tennis star Evan Hoyt has won his third doubles title of the year at the first of six events he is due to play in Australia. Hoyt teamed up with American Dusty Boyer to win the Cairns International – part of the International Tennis Federation’s Futures circuit – and continues to climb the world rankings. The duo beat home pairing Calum Puttergill and Jacob Grills 6-2, 7-5 in the final held at the Cairns International Tennis Centre on Friday.
