Nigel Edwards has become the first Welshman to book his ticket to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The 50-year-old former World No 2 amateur golfer, who made history by captaining three successive British Walker Cup teams in 2015, has been announced as the Team Leader for the Team GB golf team in Japan next year when they will be aiming to repeat the gold medal triumph of Justin Rose in Rio 2016.
Alun Wyn Jones insists Wales have more in their locker and plan to unload it in England’s direction tomorrow afternoon. The Wales captain has conceded his team have not been at their best in their two Six Nations victories so far and should perhaps have scored four more tries than they have managed so far. The two remaining unbeaten teams in this season’s tournament go head to head in what is effectively a title eliminator at the Principality Stadium.
There should be some interesting touch-line chat at the ZipWorld Stadium, Colwyn Bay, tonight ahead of the Under 20 Six Nations game between Wales and England (KO 19.05, live on S4C). There will be a host of famous fathers of aspiring young sons at the game and three players who figured in Wales’ epic, and unexpected, 10-9 win over England in Cardiff in 1993 are set to meet up to watch their sons carry on the battle 26 years on. Heading the cast will be the Wales captain from that famous day, try-scorer Ieuan Evans, and he will have his pack leader Gareth Llewellyn with him. From the England camp will be replacement wing Phil de Glanville.
Chaz Davies admits he is still getting used to his new bike as he gets the World Superbikes campaign underway in Australia. The Knighton-born rider was 14th at the end of the first practice day as new team-mate Alvaro Bautista set the pace at Phillip Island.
If you are a talented young Welsh athlete, you will be spotted and your talent will be developed to the highest possible level. This inspiring message comes from the man tasked with taking Welsh track and field stars to the next cycle of global athletics events. National coach Chris Jones has been in post since last October, following his predecessor Scott Simpson’s move to a senior coaching role at British Athletics.
Warren Gatland has told his players to climb into England tomorrow in Cardiff - but warned them to stay within the laws. The Wales coach has joined Eddie Jones in a spot of mind games before the Six Nations showdown, although his appear a more subtle attempted manipulation than the Australian’s brash claims that the home side are the greatest ever to wear the red jersey. Instead, Gatland has predicted a brutal physical contest, warning his players to stay on the right side of the referee and suggesting England prop Kyle Sinckler is a “time bomb” who could detonate at any moment.
Hundreds of club runners from all over Wales will rub shoulders with some of the nation’s elite athletes on Saturday. The annual George Crump Memorial Welsh Cross Country Championships will be held at Pembrey Country Park, near Llanelli. The current cross country season has been a particularly successful one for Welsh athletes. There have been a number of individual victories and stand out performances during the British Athletics Cross Challenge Series.
