Remember Matt Elias? He of the bright red hair, the pink hair, the blue hair, and the nifty turn of speed around the track, along with the likes of Iwan Thomas? Well, the hair’s not back, but the speed just might be, as Owen Morgan reports. Wales could be on the verge of another golden era of 400m running, says the man who was part of a wave of Welsh one lap wonders. Matt Elias – who, along with the likes of Iwan Thomas, Jamie Baulch and Tim Benjamin, enjoyed huge success on the international stage - believes a new generation of young Welsh athletes could follow in their footsteps.
Elfyn Evans continued his clean and tidy run on Rally Finland today, finishing a long Leg 2 in eighth place overall. He’s only 10.3 seconds behind team-mate Sébastien Ogier, but with the five-time World Champion again battling for the title, Evans knows that M-Sport team orders are likely to see that he stays behind his French stable-mate. Ogier is currently one place ahead in seventh, while Finland’s Teemu Suninen, driving the other works Ford Fiesta WRC, is sixth. Estonian crew Ott Tänak / Martin Järveoja continue to lead Rally Finland in their Toyota Yaris WRC.
Geraint Thomas was close to tears as he reflected on his impending victory in the Tour De France. The Welshman will win his first Tour when the peloton reaches Paris on Sunday, after finishing third in Saturday’s individual time trial on stage 20. The Team Sky rider finished the stage with a general classification lead of one minute 51 seconds ahead of Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin, who won the 31km race against the clock from Saint-Pee-sur-Nivelle to Espelette by one second from Chris Froome.
As he slept in a caravan to scare off burglars from his new business venture, Welsh international Tavis Knoyle was a long way from returning to professional rugby. The scrum-half – who has seen his career ravaged by injury – tore knee ligaments in the Dragons’ first game of last season and failed to return to the field as his team had a campaign to forget. It left the 28-year-old at a career crossroads. With two young children to support and just a year left on his Rodney Parade deal, thoughts of retirement inevitably came to mind.
Elfyn Evans completed Friday’s fast and furious Rally Finland stages in seventh place, after a good day in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC. Co-driven by Daniel Barritt, the 29-year old driver from Dolgellau is just over a minute behind leaders Ott Tänak/Martin Järveoja (Toyota) after a clean run through the smooth gravel stages. And don’t forget that Evans was in seventh position at this time last year, before going on to claim a fantastic second place.
Thousands of young people from across Wales have started the school holidays with sporting endeavour and a full stomach thanks to a multi-sport festival organised by StreetGames, held at Cardiff’s iconic Principality Stadium today. Children and young people aged from 11-18 got to shoot at goal, test their strength and aim for a hole in one, among many other activities, thanks to StreetGames, a national charity whose aim is to change the lives of disadvantaged communities across the UK through sport. Today’s event saw youngsters not only try sporting activities they’ve never experienced before but thanks to ‘Fit and Fed’, StreetGames’ initiative to help tackle holiday hunger, they got a good meal that sustained them throughout the day.
Geraint Thomas will “expect the worse” as he prepares to see off his Tour de France rivals for perhaps the final time on Friday afternoon. The Welshman heads into the mountains for the last occasion before Saturday’s time trial, with a lead that most expect him to be able to protect but there are no guarantees. Thomas and Team Sky will be alive to attacks from all his rivals as he seeks to retain his one minute 59 second advantage over Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin – an advantage preserved on yesterday's flat stage to Pau which won by Frenchman Arnaud Demare - as attention turns to Stage 19.
