Stanford Named In GB Squad For World Triathlon Mixed Relay

Non Stanford’s fight back to the top of the world triathlon tree is set to take another positive step upwards with inclusion in the British squad for the Accenture World Triathlon Mixed Relay championships in Nottingham on 7 June.

Hot on the heels of her amazing third place finish in the ITU World Series race in Yokohama, the former women’s world champion has been named in a six strong squad that boasts some of the biggest names in the sport and admitted to feeling “pretty excited” at racing with the big names.

Joining the Team Wales captain for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will be Olympic silver medallist, Jonathan Brownlee, and Stanford’s housemate Vicky Holland, who pipped her to the Olympic bronze medal in Rio two years ago

Double Commonwealth champion Jodie Stimpson, Commonwealth bronze medallist Marc Austin and 2016 British gold medallist at the 2016 European Mixed Relay Championships Tom Bishop complete the six-strong squad.

The world’s top 18 triathlon nations will be on the start-line on Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment next month with not only a place on the podium to battle for, but also vital Olympic qualification points for Tokyo 2020.

The relay squads will comprise two men and two women, with the final team selections being made on the day of the race.

“The addition of mixed relay to the Olympic programme in 2020 is massive for our sport. It’s exciting, fast paced and extremely spectator friendly, and I’m sure Nottingham will put on a fantastic show,” said Brownlee.
