Usman Khawaja Goes Gunning For A Ton Hat-trick As Glamorgan Chase T20 Boost

Glamorgan captain Michael Horgan has paid tribute to Usman Khawaja as the Australian star bids to become the first in the county’s history to score centuries in his first three appearances.

Khawaja struck 126 against Derbyshire – following his 125 against Warwickshire – to become the first Glamorgan player to make successive centuries in his first two matches.

But neither innings has yet brought him his first Glamorgan victory, although Khawaja has an early chance to put that right.

The county began another four day game against Northamptonshire at Sophia Gardens on Monday, still looking for only their second Championship win of the season.

Khawaja’s ton was eclipsed by youngster Kiran Carlson who made 152 against Derbyshire at St. Helen’s but the match ended in a draw with Glamorgan unable to get the final two wickets they needed.

Horgan said: “It was a brilliant partnership between Kiran and Usman, and it was a shame we couldn’t quite get over the line. I’m disappointed but there were far more positives than negatives to take out of it.”

“I was very happy with the way the boys went about their business. On the first day we fought back to put up a reasonable score and in their first innings at one point we took 5/5.

“I felt the way the game had gone on the last day, we put enough effort to win the game. We’re disappointed not to win the game but I feel there are far more positives we can take going forward.”

Monday’s game will be Glamorgan’s last in the competition before they begin their Vitality T20 Blast campaign and they will be hoping they can build on their impressive performance against Derbyshire.
