Wales’ Catrin Jones In World University Bid

Some of Wales’ best young weightlifters will be off on their travels this autumn with a trio of talented athletes heading to major championships.

All three were part of Team Wales at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, but this time they will be chasing medals at world and European levels.

For north Walian Catrin Jones, the World University Weightlifting Championships in Biala Podlaska, Poland between 20-23 September will be her third major event of the year.

She not only went to Australia in April, but also finished fourth at the Junior World Championships in Uzbekistan last month.

Jones will compete in the 53kg category, while Rhodri Thomas will act as the coach to the four strong British contingent in Poland. Meanwhile, Jordan Sakkas will compete at 105kg level at the European Junior/Under 23 Championships in October.

Sakkas also went to the Gold Coast earlier in the year, as did Tayla Howe, who will compete in the 75kg class in the Under 23 section at the same event in Zamosc, Poland, between 20-27 October.

  1. I’m guessing an oversight but any particular reason why you’ve left our Michael Farmer (also Welsh) from this article when he is competing at both the World Universities and European Junior Champs in the mens 69kg category??

    1. Hi, thanks for the comment. You’re right – it was an oversight. Apologies to you and Michael.
British weightlifting put out a very brief press release on 20th Aug. No mention of competitors’ clubs or area or association. There was also nothing on the Welsh Weightlifting news section. We saw the release and recognised some as Welsh competitors. Welsh weightlifting tweeted on 24 August about the Welsh competitors (and mentioned Michael, I think). But our story was posted on 23 August. There’s very little coverage of weightlifting – Welsh or otherwise – in the media and we’re trying to redress that.
But good to now know that Mikey Farmer is Welsh and from CrossFit Caerphilly!

      1. Appreciate the reply Graham and for the explanation
You’re right, Weightlifting gets very little coverage so when we do have Welsh success we obviously want to ensure any coverage is maximised, such coverage helps with bursary awards and sponsorships etc
        Again thank you
