Wales Men Promoted, But Suffer During EuroHockey Final In Glasgow

Wales men’s hockey team suffered agonising defeat against hosts Scotland in their EuroHockey Championship II final in Glasgow.

The Scots recovered from a goal down to score twice in the final quarter and lift the title.

Both teams are, though, promoted to the top tier for 2019. Wales had won 4-3 in their semi-final against France.

James Carson gave Wales the lead from a penalty corner, but Ben Cosgrove and Alan Forsyth scored twice in three minutes to win it for the hosts.

Wales women also went down, losing 3-0 against Italy to finish fourth at their EuroHockey Championships in Cardiff.

Chiara Tiddi, Celina Traverso and Federica Carta scored the Italian goals.

“We came out fighting for the bronze today, but just couldn’t hit the line,” said midfield player Sian French.

“We’ll keep on pushing as a team for the next two years and we’ll come back even stronger next time.”

The women’s team had been aiming to earn promotion to their top tie, but those hopes ended when they lost 2-1 against Russia in the semi-finals.

Belarus emerged winners in the women’s event at the Sport Wales National Centre, beating Russia 2-1 in the final.
