Brian Phillips, Aged 77, Wins Welsh National Squash Title

Two players with a combined age of more than 150 years fought out a squash final at Rhiwbina SRC.

Brian Phillips was the senior man by two years and he emerged champion ahead of Eric Robinson in the Over-75 event at the Welsh Masters Squash Championships.

Phillips, 77, had to work hard, taking the first two games against Robinson 15-13, 16-14. The next game went to 75-year-old Robinson 15-11 before Phillips, who lives in Thatchham, Berkshire, clinched the title 17-15.

Leighton Jenkins won the Welsh over-70 title, edging out Peter Kerry, while second seed Clive Morgan won against the favourite in the over-65 final.

Morgan defeated Steve Evans 16-14, 11-15, 9-15, 15-10, 15-13 in his semi-final before beating number one seed Tony Bevan 15-12, 15-4, 15-10.

Adrian Alderton and David Wright clashed in the over-60 final. Alderton put out top seed Alan James on his way to the final, 15-10, 10-15, 15-13, 15-13, while Wright was taken to five games by number two seed Graham Bastion.

Wright came through to win 15-11, 6-15, 15-11, 15-17, 15-13 to earn his place in the final.

It was Alderton who won the title, though, when he won 13-15, 16-14, 15-5, 15-11 to lift the trophy.
