First For Welsh Golf With Two Girls Picked In GB’s Junior Vagliano Team

Two Welsh golfers have been picked for the first time in the Great Britain and Ireland team for the Junior Vagliano Trophy against the Continent of Europe.

Carys Worby from Newport Sands in Pembrokeshire and Ffion Tynan from Minchinhampton have been picked by the R and A in the six girl Under 16 team to play in the match which runs parallel to the women’s competition at Golf Club Bogogno in Italy on 30 June and 1 July.

“This is great news, the first time two Welsh girls have been picked for the Junior Vagliano Trophy match and a fantastic opportunity for Carys and Ffion,” said Golf Union of Wales director of performance Gillian O’Leary.

“I am delighted for the girls and the team around them as they have worked incredibly hard to achieve this and it is good to see this being recognised and rewarded.

“It is vital to have these players coming through the system and getting ready to step up, this opportunity to play with the best players of their age in Great Britain and Ireland and against the Continent of Europe will be a huge stepping stone in their development.”

Wrexham’s Chloe Williams, who is now playing professionally on the Ladies Access Tour, was picked in the Junior Vagliano Trophy team in the past, but Wales have never had two players in the team before.

Claire Coughlan-Ryan continues in her role as captain of the Under-16 team, who lost narrowly in Northern Ireland two years ago.

“I look forward to working with a talented group of young golfers and trying to win the Junior Vagliano Trophy for the first time against the Continent of Europe,” she said.

There are no Welsh players in the Vagliano Trophy team with four Irish and four English players, led by world amateur number one ranked Leona Maguire.

The Junior Vagliano Trophy takes the form of three junior foursomes each morning and six junior singles matches each day.
