Swans, Bluebirds To Meet For First Time In Five Years

The Swans and the Bluebirds meet for the first time in five years in the opening Welsh derby of the Championship season at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday, October 26.

The return fixture in Cardiff is set for Saturday, January 11 though either could be moved for television purposes.

New manager Steve Cooper will lead his Swansea City team to the Welsh capital to take on the hugely experienced Neil Warnock.

Swansea open the new season against Hull City at the Liberty Stadium (3pm)

The Swans’ first away game of the season comes the following weekend when they travel to Pride Park to face Derby County, who missed out on a place in the Premier League after suffering play-off heartbreak against Aston Villa at Wembley.

There are four other league fixtures in August, with home games against Preston and Birmingham – who have ex-Swans coach Pep Clotet at the helm plus trips to QPR and Leeds.

Swansea have a pre-season trip to Spain, while Serie A team Atalanta visit the Liberty Stadium for a friendly on Saturday, July 27 (3pm).

Atalanta have strong links with South Wales, having played and lost against Merthyr Tydfil FC at Penydarren Park during the 1987-88 European Cup Winners Cup.

Italian club Atalanta arrive in Wales on the back of the best season in their history after finishing third in Serie A and qualifying for Champions League football.

They also reached the Coppa Italia final, losing to Lazio after a run that had seen them convincingly beat Serie A champions Juventus 3-0 en route to the May showpiece.

They are managed by experienced Gian Piero Gasperini. the 61-year-old former Juventus midfielder.

Swansea have a week-long training camp in southern Spain from June 30 to July 7. They will be based near Huelva in the region of Andalusia.

The Swans will play a training game against League Two side Mansfield Town at Complexo Desportivo, Portugal.
