Martyrs Hit Injury Trouble When Top Strikers Limp Off

Merthyr Town 0, Penybont FC 2

Merthyr Town suffered a double injury blow during the first of two pre-season fixtures in less than 24 hours, losing two of their main strikers.

Former Cardiff City youth player Gethyn Hill limped off after 33 minutes with Ryan Prosser taking over his role in attack. Went minutes later Prosser went down and had to limp painfully around the edge of Merthyr’s MetCoaches Stadium, having gone down on the far side of the pitch from the grandstand.

Corey Jenkins then led the Martyrs attack for the rest of the match.

Penybont won by scoring a goal in each half, while Merthyr dominated the first half in particular, created plenty of chances and failed to take any of them.

The Martyrs slipped to defeat against newly-promoted Cymru Premier club Penybont and now travel to play Brecon Corries on at the Rich Field on Saturday afternoon (1.45pm).

Dan Griffiths fired Penybont ahead after two minutes when the striker finished clinically past goalkeeper Alex Harris.

The visitors doubled their lead after 69 minutes and held on for victory.

Kerry Morgan, Owain Jones, Lee Lucas, captain Ashley Evans and Jenkins all went close for the Martyrs, while Hill looked fit and sharp before being forced off by injury.

Penybont complete their pre-season fixtures when they are at home against Cardiff City’s under-23 team on Tuesday, August 6 (7.30pm).
