Former Bluebird Tony’s Team Shoot Down Cardiff Youth

Under-18: Burnley 2, Cardiff City 1

Cardiff City’s youth team went up against former Bluebirds player Tony Philliskirk’s Burnley team in Lancashire – and were on the losing end of a hard fought match.

Sunderland-born Philliskirk, who made 61 appearances for Cardiff between 1995 and 1998 and even turned to refereeing for a spell near the end of his playing career, is under-18 coach at Burnley.

Goals by Mitch George and Joe McGlynn earned the home team Professional Development Under-18 League victory at Barnfield Training Centre, while Kieron Evans was Cardiff’s scorer.

Bluebirds goalkeeper Jamie Cogman made a number of terrific saves when Burnley were 2-1 ahead, making a fabulous one-on-one stop before parrying away another attempt two minutes later.

Burnley’s Edon Pruti hit the crossbar with a header following a corner, while Cardiff finished the game pushing forward.

Joel Bagan led City’s efforts to draw level and he had several accurate shots on goal kept out by goalkeeper by Lewis Thomas, before running back to make several tackles and blocks.

Coach Matthew Bloxham can be proud of the way his young players battled and fought, but they were edged out on a hot, sunny day in Burnley.

The home side started brightly and opened the scoring after seven minutes when George glanced home a header from a Ben Woods corner.

City equalised after 18 minutes when Evans linked well with Harry Pinchard from a corner and his deflected shot found the top left-hand corner.

Burnley regained the lead just after the hour when McGlynn scored his fourth goal of the under-18 season.

The Bluebirds pushed for an equaliser, although the Clarets nearly had a third towards the end Conn-Clarke tried his luck from range with a fierce strike which hit a post.

Cardiff City: Jamie Cogman, Taylor Jones, Sam Parsons, Joel Bagan, Harry Pinchard, Tom Chiabi, Rhys Schwank (Ashford 56), Rubin Colwill, Ryan Kavanagh (Thomas 50), Kieron Evans, Isaak Davies. Subs not used: Brad Stewart (gk), Clay, Aidan Macnamara.

Burnley: Thomas, Patterson, Rain, Brennan, Pruti, Rooney, Conn-Clarke, Woods, George, McGlynn, Tucker. Subs: Calderbank-Park, Connolly, Moonan, Carson, Armstrong.

Cardiff City have postponed their under-23 fixture against Birmingham City at Cardiff City Stadium, which was due to be played on Bank Holiday Monday.

The game has been called off because the Bluebirds have a Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town the next evening. Birmingham’s under-23 team will now visit Cardiff on Monday, November 4 and the fixture will be played at Cardiff International Sports Campus (1pm).
