Southern League And FA Cup AwayDays For Martyrs

Merthyr Town hit the road for Southern Premier and FA Cup fixtures over the next eight days.

The Martyrs travel to play Metropolitan Police at Imber Court in London on Saturday, while they take on Western League Plymouth Parkway in the cup.

Manager Gavin Williams and his Merthyr team enter the Emirates FA Cup in the first qualifying round, while Parkway have already played in two preliminary round ties to earn a home tie against the Welsh club.

Parkway, who have beaten Buckland 1-0 and Paulton Rovers 5-2 to reach this stage, played against Cardiff City’s development team in a pre-season friendly last month.

Former Stoke City trainee Laurence Wootton scored twice for Cardiff City’s development team in their convincing 5-1 win against Parkway at Bolitho Park.

The young Bluebirds completed a three-match tour to Devon and Cornwall with a 100 per cent record, having scored 15 goals and conceded three.

Lee Tomlin, Jacob Evans and Dan Williams were the other Cardiff scorers.

Head coach Andy Legg’s under-23 squad plus over-age additions Alex Smithies, Tomlin and Gary Madine faced a physical test against Parkway.

City led 4-1 at half-time and retained control in front of 152 spectators.

Parkway are currently joint top of the Western League Premier Division with three wins from three fixtures and a goal difference of plus 12.

Merthyr Town players and staff, though, are currently focused on their BetVictor Southern Premier fixture against Met Police on Saturday (3pm).

Manager Williams’ team will be looking to make it back-to-back victories after their Bank Holiday Monday 3-1 victory against Swindon Supermarine. A first half strike from Lee Lucas and two from Ian Traylor secured a consecutive home victory for the Martyrs.

Met Police enter the game on the back of an away win against winless Beaconsfield, who are bottom of the table.

Goals by Jack Mazzone and Ross Murdoch secured an important away victory for the Blues, who are 14th in the table.

The last time the two sides met was at Imber Court last March when the Martyrs suffered a 2-0 defeat against manager Gavin Macpherson’s men. However, the Martyrs battled out a hard fought 2-2 draw in the return fixture at the MetCoaches Stadium back in September last season.
