Llandudno Sailor Moreton Set For Royal Seal Of Approval

Llandudno sailor Paul Moreton will be presented with one of the Royal Yachting Association’s most prestigious awards by HRH the Princess Royal, President of the RYA, in recognition of his commitment to North Wales sailing.

Moreton has been nominated for a Lifetime Commitment Award by his club and has been selected as a winner by the RYA Honours and Awards Panel. He will receive his award at the organisation’s annual awards ceremony in London on November 18.

Moreton, who runs his own business in Llandudno supplying the North Wales hotel trade, finds time to help out in several capacities at his local sailing club where he has been a member for more than 50 years.

He is a successful sailor in his own right in the Supernova class of boat, winning the club championship again this year, and is now a Vice President after two spells as Commodore, as well as being Sailing Captain, Championship Secretary and Principal Race Officer (PRO).

He has also been PRO for the national championships at Pwllheli and an RYA powerboat instructor, he also helps out with coaching at Llandudno.

“I started sailing when my parents move to Llandudno to run a hotel when I was 10,” said Moreton. “I was banned from the beach at that age, but I saw them sailing and was given the chance to try by someone else when they were busy – from then I was hooked.

“I am delighted to be receiving this award , having come through the ranks of the club and held various positions. I was the first junior member at the club to become Commodore.

“We hosted three national championships in Llandudno this year and I was PRO for each of them, including the Supernova which was their 20th anniversary championships and we had an entry of 120 which is phenomenal.

“I also competed in some events round the country in my Supernova, which was really enjoyable.”
