Devils Can Be Crowned League Champions In Belfast

Cardiff Devils go for glory in their final Elite League away match of the season on Friday (7pm).

Captain Jake Morissette and his team fly to Northern Ireland to play Belfast Giants at their SSE Arena home.

Memories of Giants players celebrating their Challenge Cup triumph after beating Devils in the Challenge Cup final only 11 days ago are still painful for the Welsh club.

They need one win from their remaining five fixtures to make sure of top spot and how they would love to be crowned League champions for a second successive season on Belfast ice.

Friday’s fixture is also crucial to Devils hopes of winning the Erhardt Conference. Cardiff and Belfast are level on points at the top, but Devils have a game in hand.

They have three Conference games to play, while Giants have to two left including Friday’s meeting.

Coach Andrew Lord has a full roster to select from after goalie Ben Bowns and defenceman Mark Louis returned from injury for their 6-3 win at Sheffield Steelers in midweek.

Drew Paris was the healthy scratch in Sheffield, but will be back in contention to face Giants.

Giants were without netminders Jackson Whistle and Stephen Murphy plus Jim Vandermeer, Mark Garside, Jonathan Ferland, Dustin Johner and David Rutherford for their 8-4 win against Fife Flyers on Wednesday.

Head coach Adam Keefe returned to playing, while youngsters Adam Robinson and Ross Hancock. American goalie Chris Truehl started in the Giants net.

Cardiff Devils captain Jake Morissette is sprayed in champagne as he holds the Monteith Bowls Elite League championship trophy aloft a year ago.

Devils will be cheered on by a large force of Red Army away fans in Belfast as they aim to lift the Monteith Bowl trophy again and qualify for the European Champions League.

Cardiff would love to clinch top spot tonight, but Keefe’s Belfast will be out to avoid a Cardiff win and the celebrations which would certainly follow.
