Josh Sheehan insists he never gave up on his dream of playing football for Wales – even when he had almost a year out with a knee injury.
The 25-year-old has been rewarded for his impressive start to the season with Newport County by being named in the squad for this month’s three internationals.
“When I did my knee and was out for nearly a year it was tough,” said Sheehan, who ruptured cruciate ligaments when then on loan with the Exiles from Swansea City early in 2017.
“But I’ve always believed in myself and my ability. I know when I’m playing regularly my ability will shine through and it makes it extra sweet now. It’s never too late.
Sheehan, speaking to County’s club website, added: “Even from when I was a little boy growing up to now seeing people I know in the team, you dream of yourself being in that position and showing what you can do in the Welsh shirt.
“It’s always been a dream of mine.”
Sheehan is one of two Exiles players in the squad with keeper Tom King also named for the friendly with the USA and the Nations Cup games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Wales boss Ryan Giggs was among the crowd when Sheehan impressed in County’s Carabao Cup fourth round clash against Newcastle United.

The Pembrey-born player has also been an ever-present as Michael Flynn’s men have powered the top of League Two.
Sheehan netted his first goal of the season in Tuesday’s defeat at Carlisle and he hails the influence of the manager as a key part to his performances this season.
“It makes a big difference to have the confidence of the manager and all the coaching staff,” said Sheehan, who has represented Wales at under21 level.
“To know that when you make a mistake it won’t get highlighted that much is massive.
“Once you’re confident, you play a different game and I feel that at Newport. I feel like something has clicked.”
Sheehan will link-up with Wales after Saturday’s FA Cup first-round trip to Leyton Orient.
“He’s had a bad injury,” said Flynn of Sheehan. “He was let go by Swansea. I was able to keep him here and he’s just getting better and better.
“I think he’s starting to fulfil his potential. There’s no doubt that he can play higher than League Two.
“When he’s playing with better players, training with them day in, day out, he’s only going to get better.
“It might suit him, playing higher up.”
