Newport County’s Micheal Flynn Eyeing Another Cup Cash Bonanza But Says League Is Priority

Michael Flynn is eyeing another Cup payday for Newport County but insists the league is still his priority.

The Exiles are in the hat for Monday’s FA Cup 2nd Round draw after the 2-1 win away at Leyton Orient thanks to Jamie Devitt’s stunning winner.

The on loan Blackpool player smashed home the winner after Ashley Baker’s opener had been cancelled out by the O’s Hector Kyprianou.

County have enjoyed several big-money Cup clashes in recent years and with fans still not allowed in grounds another good run would be a handy boost.

“The most important thing for me is the finances,” admitted Flynn, whose side are also top of League Two.

“If I’m totally honest, is it (the cup) a priority? No, the league is. Would I rather three points? Yes, I would.

“But I’ll never ever disrespect the cup because I love the cup, and I know what it means to this club.”

Devitt got his first goal of his loan spell – which runs until January – in the mid-week defeat at Carlisle.

But the 30-year-old’s long-range effort this time proved decisive as County continued their excellent start to the campaign.

“It was a fantastic goal,” added Flynn. “He had a great first touch and put it in the top corner. That’s why I wanted him here.

“I know what he can do, he scores goals out of nothing, and I thought he was superb today.

“I would say he had a bad Tuesday because he’s the type of lad who would rather anybody score and us win than him score and us lose.

“He’s a great lad as well. He’s scored two goals in a week but today will mean everything because he got the winner.”

“I thought we were excellent from start to finish. It was an unbelievable away performance against a Leyton Orient team who have been in good form and can cause any team problems on their day.

“I thought we were by far the better team if I am honest, but they are always dangerous. We need to start killing teams off. I am going to keep saying it and saying it.”
