Gerwyn Owen Takes Over At The Helm At RYA Cymru Wales

RYA Cymru Wales has appointed Gerwyn Owen as its new Chief Executive.

Gwynedd-born Owen has over 30 years’ experience in the Sport Sector, initially in Facility Management before a 16 year career with Disability Sport Wales as part of their Senior Management Team strategically leading the Performance programme.

In his role as the Performance Pathway Manager, he established a world leading Talent & Academy programme identifying Paralympic champions such as Aled Sion Davies and Mark Colbourne to name but a few, as well as strategically supporting Governing Bodies in Wales to provide inclusive performance pathways within their sports.

Owen has led a number of teams within his role in Disability Sport Wales, as well as leadership roles within Team Wales at recent Commonwealth Games.

He will replace Phil Braden, following his passing too early in life after a period of illness.

Owen said: “I am delighted to be joining RYA Cymru Wales, however it is tinged with sadness as we’re only in this position due to the passing of Phil, someone who brought so much to the sport.

“I am truly passionate about Welsh Sport, and my drive is to get the best out of people, from the people engaging with the sport to the coaches, volunteers and staff involved in the boating environment”.

“The boating community is passionate, committed and talented and I look forward to working with all the volunteers, staff, board and partners to grow and further develop this fantastic organisation.”

Mike Butterfield, Chair of RYA Cymru Wales, said: ‘’On behalf of the Board I welcome Gerwyn to the team at RYA Cymru Wales. We feel lucky to have located someone with the experience of Sport, who will seamlessly fit in with our values, share our strategy vision, and will be welcomed by our stakeholders.”

Owen will take up the role in August.
