Robert Croft Backs Glamorgan To Make T20 Last Eight Despite End Of Winning Streak

Robert Croft still believes Glamorgan are well placed to make the Vitality Blast T20 knockout stages, despite losing their unbeaten streak.

The head coach watched his team fall to a convincing defeat at Somerset on Sunday, the county’s first setback following five straight victories.

A sustained display of powerful hitting by New Zealander Corey Anderson – who struck 72 from just 30 balls – proved the decisive innings at Taunton where Somerset won by 29 runs.

But with Glamorgan still fourth in the south division – three points clear of Surrey with two games to play – Croft insisted: “We still have an opportunity with two more games to go in this competition.

“I thought that the last five overs we bowled went for more than we would have wanted. But the guys who bowled at that stage for us have done so for years.

“This time it went the other way and Corey Anderson came off and it was his day. They scored 79 off the last five overs which took them over 200.

“In reply, even batting not quite the way we would want, we still got 180 from which we can take a bit of confidence.

“Chasing down a total like that you have to try to keep up with the run rate because you can’t guarantee those massive overs at the end.

“We had to go for everything all the way through and that’s the way we play but it didn’t quite come off for us today.

“Let’s be fair, though. If someone had said we’d win five of the last six games we would have taken it.”

Glamorgan now play Sussex at Hove on Tuesday, where a win would confirm their place in the quarter-finals.

If they fail to make it count, then their final opportunity will be at home to Surrey on Friday.

Chasing Somerset’s 210-8, Glamorgan reached 181-9 with Somerset’s Max Waller taking four wickets.

Craig Meschede top scored with 35, but in-form Colin Ingram fell for 19 when Glamorgan’s reply stood at only 25.
