Strikers Madine And Zohore Crucial To Bluebirds’ Quest

Fulham are back in second place, ahead of Cardiff City, in the battle to earn promotion.

Ryan Sessegnon, 17, silenced Millwall’s boo boys of Millwall by scoring his 15th goal of the season, while Kevin McDonald and Aleksandar Mitrovic completed a 3-0 win.

Fulham extended their unbeaten run to 22 matches and are two points ahead of the Bluebirds in the chase to secure second place in the Championship.

Manager Neil Warnock and his Cardiff team can move back above Fulham if they win against Nottingham Forest at home on Saturday evening (7.45pm).

Warnock is likely to again use both 6ft 4ins centre-forward Gary Madine and Kenneth Zohore in City’s bid for victory. They may not play together, but Madine is a big, physical striker who can cause major problems for defenders.

Madine has not delivered goals for Cardiff in their promotion push, but Warnock still believes his £5m striker is worth his weight in gold.

If the Bluebirds fly back into the Premiership, and deliver Warnock a record breaking eighth promotion, the effort of the 27-year-old Madine will have played a crucial part.

Since his arrival, Danish striker Ken Zahore has ended an 11 match goal drought and scored five times, while Cardiff have picked up five wins and two draws in the 10 games since his arrival on 31 January from Bolton.

“I’ll have my critics, because strikers are judged on goals, but I believe in Gary because I know what he does for the squad, whether he is in the team or on the bench. I didn’t think we would get him, but I’m absolutely delighted that we did,” said Warnock.

“We had no Danny Ward, and no other options, and we wouldn’t have been anywhere near where we are now if he hadn’t signed for us.

“He won’t be everyone’s favourite because he doesn’t score many goals, and because we paid good money for him, but Gary has a major contribution to make. He knows what his manager thinks about him, and that’s the main thing for any player.

“He has spurred on Ken Zahore and it has brought out the best in him having some competition. He really softened up Norwich last weekend before Ken came on to score.

“That was a big factor in why Ken had a bit more space than he would normally have had. I didn’t feel Ken would have done what he did at Norwich if Gary hadn’t have been on for the first hour.”

Warnock will be looking for Madine to clear the path for Zahore to shine once again as Cardiff face two vital games in the space of four days. First up is Nottingham Forest at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight (Saturday) with a trip to Derby County to follow on Tuesday evening.

The difference in Zahore since the arrival of Madine has been stark. Having a rival for the striking role, as well as an ally on the field, has seen him rediscover his cutting edge.

“There is a part of the game that Ken hasn’t got, and never will have, and that the physical part. I said to him the other day that he’s the only centre forward I know who has never had a booking – I think that sums him up,” said Warnock.

“When he is on his game he is very difficult to handle and I’ve asked him to make sure he is on his game at the weekend.”

With Fulham having played at Millwall last night (Friday), Cardiff will know exactly what they have to do to grab the second spot and return to the Premiership for the first time since 2014. Warnock pledged to watch last night’s game “because there isn’t a good film on”, but isn’t a fan of his side’s late night kick-off time on Saturday.

“I never thought in my wildest dreams, and I’ve been a manager for 38 years, that I’d ever see a game of football kick-off at 7.45pm on a Saturday night. When I retire I will never be watching a game at that time on TV, I can assure you of that,” added Warnock.

The late kick-off might be not be to the 69-year-old Warnock’s liking, but he is relishing the prospect of returning to the top-flight.

“With three of four games to go the pressure is going to be there on everyone, whether you are second or third. That’s what you’d expect at this time of year given what’s at stake,” said Warnock.

“We should have beaten Aston Villa and got a point against Wolves. We’ve had a bad run and we should have got four points and been celebrating by now.

“We haven’t got that and it means we are going to have to work hard again. We know that the Forest game, as well as Sunderland at Fulham, won’t be straight forward – no games are in the Championship.

“Forest are a team being turned around by Aitor Karanka. I do like him as a manger and I know they will be looking for a good finish to their season so they can start planning for the start for the next one.”

Remaining fixtures for the top three:

Wolves: Bolton (A), Sheffield Wednesday (H), Sunderland (A).

Cardiff City: Nottingham Forest (H), Derby (A), Hull (A), Reading (H).

Fulham: Sunderland (H), Birmingham (A).
