Wales men's water polo team looking to medal at September's European Championships.

Wales’ Water Polo Squads Need Cash To Make A Splash In Malta

Wales’ men’s and women’s water polo teams are appealing for funds to boost their medal bid at the Commonwealth Championships.

The squads have launched a GoFundMe page ahead of the Championships in Malta in September.

This will be the fourth European Water Polo Championships and Wales have competed in every tournament to date.

In 2014, the men’s team battled hard against tough opposition to finish sixth while the women, competing in their first championships, took fifth spot.

The squads this year boast players that have competed for Great Britain at both full senior and junior levels and both are targeting the podium.

Wales’ men’s squad is coached by Phil Powell who guided Solihull to the British Water Polo League title this season.

The squad includes GB international and Wales and City of Bristol captain Carl Wyatt and Chris Taylor who will be competing in a record fourth Commonwealth Championships.

GB international and captain of Welsh Wanderers water polo team Daniel Laxton and GB junior star Joe Jenkins-Delf are also in the squad.

The women’s will be captained by Harriet Robinson who was part of the successful 2014 team.

Coach Darryl Ward’s talented, young team also includes goalkeeper Anna Jenkins-Delf and Nia Saunders who are both GB internationals.

But as a minority sport, both teams are entirely self-funded and rely on the athletes themselves, sponsorship and fundraising activities to pay for the competition costs.

The squad is looking for support to take 26 athletes (13 in both teams), coaches, team managers and physiotherapists to Malta.

All financial support provided will go towards competition costs which include travel, transport, accommodation, food, team kit and competition entry fees.
