Angry Flynn Demands Reaction From County Players

Michael Flynn is an angry man. He is fed up seeing his talented Newport County team throw away chances of firing up their promotion chase.

He is demanding a big reaction when County play Exeter City at Rodney Parade next Saturday.

Manager Flynn was really fed up after County’s 3-2 defeat at Crewe Alexandra, a result which saw them slip to 13th in League Two.

“I’m angry because we keep on making the same mistakes,” said Flynn. “I’m angry and I’ll speak to the players behind closed doors.

“I’ve told the boys they collapsed, but we have to keep going, keep working and try to fix it.

“We should have seen the game out. Crewe didn’t really look like in the scoring second half and then they go and score twice in four minutes on 88 minutes and in injury time. It’s not good enough.

“We probably should have gone in at half-time more than 1-0 down.

“Crewe deserved a 2-0 lead in the first-half. We were nowhere near in the first half and it’s not good enough. You can imagine my frustration.

“We got back into it, but I can’t make any excuses for the two goals we conceded at the end. They were poor goals. We just couldn’t defend and it’s as simple as that.”

County have gone six fixtures without a League Two win – one point from a possible 18 – and Flynn says: “You look at the last three league games against Crawley, Stevenage and now Crewe and we should be on far more points.

“If we had a bit more about us then we’d have more points. It’s as simple as that really.”

The squad now have a full week’s training and recovery before they go again in League Two against Exeter City at Rodney Parade.

“I have to pick the players up now,” Flynn. “I have to get them going because they are going to be down. They are my players and I’ll do everything to help them.

“We need to start cutting out mistakes and start delivering because we’re too inconsistent at the moment.

”Tyreeq Bakinson did well after he came on, Scot Bennett was good protecting the defence and he did a lot of running off the ball as well.

“Jamille Matt put a good shift in and Antoine in the second half was decent.”

The Exiles stay 13th in the table following the defeat in Cheshire, eight points off the play-off positions with a game in hand.

County hit back from 1-0 down, a goal scored by Jordan Bowery, to lead 2-1 when Antoine Semenyo and Padraig Amond scored.

Newport led after 88 minutes, but a penalty by Chris Porter after 88 minutes and Callum Airley’s injury time winner left County down and out.

Flynn is desperately disappointed after his teams win against Leicester City in the Emirates FA Cup. He recalled Dan Butler, who missed County’s cup win because of suspension, with Vashon Neufville moving to the bench.

Exiles again maintained the 4-4-2 formation that worked to perfection last time out, as Antoine Semenyo and Robbie Willmott provided support to the 30-goal strike force of Amond and Matt.

Newport County AFC (4-4-2): Day, Forbes, Demetriou, Franks (capt), Butler, Dolan (Bakinson 57), Bennett, Willmott (O’Brien 90), Semenyo (Sheehan 80), Amond, Matt. Subs not used: Townsend, Pipe, Marsh-Brown, Neufville

Their next fixture is against Crewe away on Saturday and manager Michael Flynn will insist his players forget all about the FA Cup after the draw, which is being made after the Wolves v Liverpool tie this evening.
