Hedden Leads Devils’ High Five In Cup Clash

Cardiff Devils maintained their perfect start to the domestic season when they scored four final period goals to leave Coventry Blaze down and out.

Devils followed wins against Nottingham Panthers in Elite League (3-2) and MK Lightning (9-1, Cup) by beating Blaze 5-1 at Ice Arena Wales.

Coach Andrew Lord and his team have started their Challenge Cup campaign with back-to-back winning, firing 14 goals in their two group matches.

Devils and Blaze were locked at 1-1 after two periods, but the home team took control in the final 20 minutes.

Devils now play Sheffield Steelers away on Sunday in their first meeting since their Elite League play-off final in Nottingham last April when Cardiff won the title.

The lone goal of the opening period came off the stick of Mike Hedden after a nice dish from Joey Martin to send him in to score on Hedley at 7-39.

The Blaze evened the scoreline on the opening shift of the middle period when Alex Nikiforuk blocked a shot and ended up on a breakaway, scoring on Bowns to make it 1-1 29 seconds into the period.

Neither team could break the deadlock for the rest of the second period and headed into the final frame still tied at a goal apiece.

The third period was all Devils with four goals for the home side to put this game away.

Martin broke the deadlock at 44-14. After initially being stopped on a breakaway he managed to tuck in the second effort past netminder Jordan Hedley with Sean Bentivoglio picking up the lone assist.

At 48-57 Jake Morissette took a feed from Layne Ulmer behind the goal and buried it past Hedley to put the Devils up 3-1, while Hedden tipped in a Bryce Reddick shot after 48-57.

The effort was reviewed after a coach’s challenge from the Coventry bench, but the officials ruled it a good goal.

Devils’ fifth came after an impressive effort by Charlie Linglet to fight through the Blaze defence. He found Ulmer at the side of the goal and he fired the puck past Hedley to round off the scoring at 5-1.
