Hoyt, ranked 10 in Britain, improved his ranking after reaching the last 16 of the Latrobe City Traralgon Challenger event in Australia having been competing on the lesser ranked Futures events.

After getting a bye in the first qualifying round, Hoyt saw off Australia’s Lucas Vuradin before being beaten by Tung-Lin Wu of Taipei.

But he qualified for the first round proper as a lucky loser beating another Aussie, then world ranked No 453 Blake Ellis, in the last 32.

Hoyt lost out to Australia’s Jordan Thompson – ranked 101st in the world – in straight sets in their last 16 match which earned him $1,290 in prize money.

There was disappointment for Hoyt in this week’s Apis Canberra International Challenger event when he was beaten in the second qualifying round in three sets by Australia’s Jayden Court, ranked 1086 on the ATP Tour lists, despite taking the first set.

In the doubles rankings, Hoyt remains at a career high 376.
