Key Players Set To Rejoin Newport County Relegation Battle

Mark O’Brien and Joss Labadie both return for Newport County in Saturday’s League Two home match against Accrington Stanley.

Dublin-born defender O’Brien, 24, is ready to play after injury, while 26-year-old Labadie has completed a three-match suspension.

“Mark had signs of concussion and that automatically ruled him out for the week,” said manager Mike Flynn.

“He will be back against Accrington and that’s good news because he’s been outstanding since he’s been here.

“It’s a big positive for us and Labadie is back as well after his suspension.”

County are second from bottom – only Orient are behind them – and facing a straight battle with Hartlepool United to avoid relegation.

The Northern club, managed by ex-Cardiff City boss Dave Jones, are one point in front of County with three fixtures to play.

Flynn will have the fitness of captain David Pipe and Scott Bennett assessed over the next few days. Both suffered injuries during Monday’s 6-1 defeat at Plymouth Argyle.

“Pipey had a bit of an injury,” said Flynn. “He has a hip flexor problem, which he’s been carrying a little bit, and I’m sure that will settle down by Saturday.

“But it’s an unfortunate one because he’s an experienced lad and our captain. You want to keep those sort of players out there on the big occasions.

“Benno has a sore hamstring, but it’s too early to tell how bad it is.

“We’ll see what the physio says in the next few days. Hopefully it settles down and he’ll be ready for Saturday.”

Flynn has come big selection decisions to make for Saturday’s match and he may opt to give striker Aaron Williams a start. He scored County’s consolation goal at Plymouth.

“He took his goal well and we created quite a few chances,” said Flynn.

“The effort was there. It was just the manner in which we conceded and the amount we conceded.

“It was always an uphill task at 2-0 but we’ve still got to be a bit more savvy.

“It gets to a point where you have to stop chasing the game and try not to concede any more.

“We tried getting that message on, but unfortunately Plymouth were in top form and it was too much for us.”
